Site Under Construction! Thank you for your patience - Maren
I’ve put together this list of Client Resources to give my clients a place to find practical, easy-to-understand information that can help support your horse(s) between appointments.
Here you’ll find my list of resources on topics such as nutrition, hoof care, thrush prevention and treatment, DIY recipes, hoof boots, body care, and more.
These resources are meant to complement the individualized care we develop for your horse. Every horse is different, and what works wonderfully for one may not be the right choice for another. When in doubt, or when dealing with an ongoing or serious issue, please always reach out so we can figure out what makes the most sense for your horse.
I’ll continue adding to this page as I find and create more useful information and develop new resources.
For the majority of horses, a forage-based diet centred around long-stem grass hay should be the foundation of their nutrition. Vitamins and minerals should be balanced to each hay test, and free-choice loose salt should always be provided. For horses with PPID, EMS, IR, PSSM, or hoof pathologies, proper diet balancing is especially important.
I am always happy to help clients review their current diets and balance their hay analysis to NRC (National Research Council) guidelines. However, in cases where a more advanced overview is required, I recommend the following:

Thrush is one of the most common hoof issues I see, and yet it is often overlooked or not treated as an important source of pain and discomfort. Thrush affects the caudal (rear) portion of the hoof, primarily within the frog’s central sulcus. In severe cases, you may see a “butt crack,” where the thrush has invaded deep into the sensitive tissue between the heel bulbs. Thrush can be influenced by imbalanced trimming, hoof contraction, diet, environment, and lack of healthy movement.
As a general rule, you should never use a product on your horse’s sensitive tissues that you wouldn’t feel comfortable using on yourself. This includes products such as Koppertox, bleach, Thrush Buster, and other harsh chemicals. While we work on rehabilitating the hoof and addressing the underlying causes, the thrush itself still needs to be treated to restore proper caudal hoof health.
